Have you heard about TikTok Resumes? We’re going to explore all the details of this latest recruitment trend!

TIKTOK RESUMES

While the video resume concept isn’t entirely new, it’s likely to become mainstream soon thanks to the recent launch of TikTok Resumes.

The social media platform has increasingly become popular with employers as a recruitment tool over the last 6 – 12 months, particularly with those who are looking to hire Generation Y & Z employees.

Now TikTok has levelled-up its recruitment game and officially launched a pilot video resume program (only for users in the U.S.A. at this point).

What are TikTok Resumes?

TikTok Resumes are video resumes, or elevator pitches, created on the social media platform TikTok.

TikTok Resumes are specifically designed to express an interest in a job vacancy posted on tiktokresumes.com or to let a recruiter know on the platform you are open to work.

It’s important to note TikTok Resumes is currently in a pilot phase. Job opportunities are open until 31 July 2021 at this point.

How to get a job with TikTok Resumes

TikTok Resumes can assist candidates to find a job in two ways:

  1. Candidates search for advertised job vacancies via www.tiktokresumes.com and apply to job openings (similar to job search platforms such as Seek) by submitting a link to their public video resume.
  2. Candidates post a public video resume using the hashtag #TikTokResumes and wait for recruiters/employers to contact them. Candidates have the option of tagging their ideal employer in their video resume as a targeted expression of their interest.

How to create a TikTok Video Resume

Creating a TikTok video resume is a fairly straightforward process. Here’s a brief overview:

  1. Create a video with traditional resume content or an elevator pitch.
  2. Post it using the hashtag #TikTokResumes (ensuring both your video and account are made public or ‘for everyone’).
  3. Browse job vacancies at www.tiktokresumes.com
  4. Submit the video resume link to a job advertisement to apply.

TikTok Resume tips

Some of the guidelines TikTok recommends to those who are looking to create a video resume on their platform include:

  • Highlight what you can offer an employer, job experience and passions.
  • Don’t include your last name or email address (important due to privacy reasons as your video resume needs to be publicly available!).
  • Don’t be afraid to let your personally shine through.
  • Keeping your video resume active for at least a month allows adequate time for recruiters to review your content.
  • If using background music, ensure it’s not too loud as it will distract from your content.
  • Film your video vertically.
  • Use the hashtag #TikTokResumes (so your content can be searchable).
  • Get creative – use the platform’s tools and features.
  • Tag an organisation you’re interested in working for, however you should check first to see if they’re working with TikTok to accept video resumes.
  • Toggle off ‘Allow comments’.

What kind of job can I get with a TikTok Resume?

A search of the job openings on www.tiktokresumes.com reveals job advertisements for the following occupations:

  • Social media strategist
  • Application developer
  • Digital marketing account manager
  • Business development executive
  • Art director
  • Brand ambassador/sales assistant
  • Client services manager/executive
  • Copywriter
  • Graphic designer
  • Data analyst
  • Hair stylist
  • Recruiter
  • and more!

TikTok has partnered with certain brands as part of the pilot video resume program, so you’ll only find job vacancies listed by official partners at this point.

As the platform gains popularity, it’s a safe bet the types and number of job openings will grow, if the pilot proves successful and the program expands.

Benefits of TikTok Resumes

If you’re comfortable with appearing on camera and speaking in a video, creating a resume just got a whole lot easier(?) and fun!

For all those early adopters out there, developing a polished video resume will definitely help you stand out from the crowd and, in the case of TikTok Resumes, provide you with job opportunities that might not be open to others.

Video resumes also allow for an additional opportunity to overtly demonstrate skills such as verbal communication, video editing, social media usage and marketing, and highlight your unique creativity.

Pitfalls of TikTok Resumes

Traditional resumes still have some advantages over TikTok Resumes.

The advice has been to avoid photos and references to gender, appearance, race, religion, nationality etc. on resumes to reduce the risk of bias recruitment decisions and level the playing field. Video resumes obviously flip this!

While TikTok hasn’t specified the ideal length of a video resume, it would be too short to include all the detail you normally would in a traditional two-page resume.  Important information about your experience, skills, knowledge and qualifications would need to be greatly reduced to produce concise and consumable video content.

Based on this, Tiktok Resumes are more suited to short elevator pitches rather than a replacement for traditional resumes.

There are also concerns about accessibility for those who may have difficulty creating and consuming videos due to their special needs.

Summary

While TikTok Resumes (and video resumes in general) are still in their infancy, awareness of the trend is important if you plan to apply for jobs in the future.

It’s unlikely video resumes will entirely replace traditional resumes in the foreseeable future as they lend themselves better to elevator pitches due to their length. Both have a place in the recruitment process and complement each other.
